Hinges

As with most things I looked for when designing and building my pannier systems, the hinges available for the lids were simply not up to the job, and certainly no where near the quality I wanted for my end product. So, like everything else, I set about designing my own.

I must admit that I did not really know what I was aiming for, all I had to do was make a sturdy hinge that would allow the lids to be removed quickly and easily. After several quite entertaining prototypes were made, I eventually chose the best parts of each prototype, added them all together, and ended up with the first of the hinges I make today.

Today, they are made from laser cut, 1.6mm 316 stainless steel back plates, with 10mm dia, 316 stainless steel pins and swivels. The whole assembly is TIG welded together by hand.

The finished hinge is stronger than any other hinge I managed to find, suitable for the job, and yet they allow easy and smooth removal of the lids if required.

Like everything else about Worldbeater panniers, this is a unique part that has evolved from many hours of development and input from experienced engineers.

Again, no other pannier system offers this type of quality and attention to detail, and of course, the hinges can be repaired if they should become damaged.

Framework and Mountings

With the entire framework being manufactured from laser cut 316 stainless steel, and mounted to the motorcycle with stainless steel fasteners, quality and functional ability were top of the list when designing the framework and mountings. When the main panniers are removed, the framework is not to obtrusive, and is out of the way. Being made of stainless steel, the frames will look as good in twenty years time, as they do the day you fix them to your motorcycle. They also never need repainting or powder coating, unless of course you want to paint them, and even then, they will never rust where a stone chip occurs.

These pannier frames really are the genuine and original "Fit and forget" piece of equipment.

Again, if you should damage any part of the frames, they can be easily repaired in any workshop. Failing that, all components are available separately.

Locks

The lock catches are the only component that I do not make myself.

These catches are manufactured by Protex Ltd, and are constructed out of 100% 316 stainless steel.

I have tried to break one of these catches, and found it impossible with basic hand tools (screwdrivers, saws, picks and crowbars) Only when slab cutters and angle grinders were used did I eventually break one.

They are secured with small padlocks. The quality of the padlock you choose to use is up to you, as I have found that everyone has their own favorite type of lock. I have yet to hear of anyone, anywhere having a set of Worldbeaters broken into.

Fasteners and Fixings

The panniers are fastened to the framework using four 8mm bolts and 50mm bobbins in each pannier. People have asked about a quick release system for my panniers, but having seen, or heard, of just about every type of pannier that is not positively bolted on to the machine, flying off, I have no intention of making one. One question people never ask, is what are these quick release systems like when they have been on and off the bike several hundred times? The Worldbeater pannier systems stay on the bike, where you bolted them. I do not believe that you should compromise security for the sake of undoing a few bolts!
